Octopus Card: the essential HK$66 card
The Octopus Card (HK$66 including HK$50 stored value) works on all MTR (metro), buses, trams, the Peak Tram, all ferries (including the Star Ferry), and most convenience stores and restaurants. It is a contactless card that you tap on the reader. Get one at any MTR station on arrival. Reload at any MTR station, 7-Eleven, or Circle K. The card pays for itself in two days of transit. There is no reason to use cash for transport in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong weather: the seasons
Hong Kong has three distinct seasons: October–December (cool, 20–25°C, sunny, the best time to visit), January–March (cool and cloudy, 15–20°C, Chinese New Year is in this window — book hotels 3 months ahead), and April–September (hot, 28–35°C, typhoon season, 70% humidity). Typhoons typically hit 3–5 times per year (July–September) — they shut the city down completely. The humidity is the thing that catches people out: 80–95% in summer, plan indoor activities in the afternoon.
The MTR: faster than it looks
Hong Kong's MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is one of the most efficient in the world: 99.9% on-time rate, clean, air-conditioned, and covers every tourist destination. The Airport Express (24 minutes to Central, HK$115) has free WiFi and a check-in service at Hong Kong Station. The East Rail Line cross-border service (since 2022) goes directly to Shenzhen (Lo Wu station) and Shenzhen North (for high-speed rail to the rest of China).
Etiquette and culture
Hong Kong is Chinese but with its own identity, shaped by 150 years of British rule. Queue discipline is strict — and enforced. No eating or drinking on the MTR (S$2,000 fine). Do not jaywalk — it is illegal and enforced. Photography is unrestricted. Tipping is not expected but appreciated in upscale restaurants (10%). The Cantonese language is dominant — English is widely spoken in tourist areas. The bun snatching at Cheung Chau (May) is the most spectacular local festival: 12-foot bamboo towers, contestants climbing to grab buns at the top.
Shenzhen as a day trip
Hong Kong's border with mainland China is 30 minutes from Central via the East Rail Line (HK$42 to Shenzhen). Shenzhen is one of the fastest cities in the world and has become an extraordinary destination for technology, design, and food. The Huaqiangbei electronics market (the world's largest electronics market), the Dongmen market (clothing and street food), and the COCO Park nightlife district are all accessible on a day trip. The Shenzhen Metro is even faster than Hong Kong's.
