The Garden of the Five Bridges (Barbican)
On the roof of the Barbican Centre's cinema wing, accessible via the lifts near the Churchill statue. A hidden garden with herbs, wildflowers, and views across the City that almost nobody knows about. Open during Barbican events. The Barbican estate itself — all that brutalist concrete — is one of the most extraordinary pieces of urban planning in the world: a city within a city, 40 acres, with its own conservatory, lake, and theatre.
Postman's Park (St. Martin's Le Grand, City)
A small park tucked behind St. Martin's Le Grand post office. The Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice: 54 ceramic tiles commemorating ordinary people who died saving others — a schoolgirl who saved a child from a fire, a lifeboatman, a clergyman who died in a rescue. It was started by the painter G.F. Watts in 1900 and completed by the community. Quiet, moving, completely off the tourist track.
The Goddards Window (St. James's)
The Goddards building (1920s) on the corner of John Adam Street in St. James's has one of the most remarkable Art Deco windows in London: a stained-glass tribute to the Indian Army and the Great War, hidden behind the building's street facade. Walk in and look up. Ask at the desk if you cannot find it.
Little Venice (Maida Vale)
The canal junction where the Regent's Canal meets the Grand Union Canal, named for obvious reasons. The Waterway pub has a terrace on the water. The Summerhouse restaurant has the best brunch in the area. Walk the canal east toward Camden or west toward Paddington — both directions are scenic and uncrowded. On summer weekends, the Paddington Rec cricket ground behind the canal hosts amateur matches.
The Clink Prison Museum (Southwark)
The Clink was one of London's oldest and most notorious prisons, operating from the 12th century until 1789. The museum is below street level, in the original prison archaeological remains. Dark, narrow, cold — genuinely atmospheric. Combine with a walk along the South Bank to the Golden Hinde (Sir Francis Drake's ship, reconstructed, moored near London Bridge) and Hay's Galleria.
