Local Tips for London — Insider Knowledge for First-Timers

Everything you need to know before you go to London — the transport, the etiquette, the neighborhoods, the traps, and the things nobody tells you.

Oyster vs Contactless: use the oyster card

The Oyster card (deposit £5) caps at the daily Travelcard rate, so you never pay more than you would for an unlimited day pass. Tap in and tap out on the tube. For London Bridge, the Elizabeth line (new as of 2022) is faster and less crowded than the Jubilee line. On weekends, check for engineering works — Transport for London closes entire lines for track maintenance, often on just one line at a time. The TfL website has real-time status.

The London Pass: worth it only if you do the math

The London Pass (1 day £76, 2 days £99, 3 days £119) covers 90+ attractions, including the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Hampton Court, and a Thames cruise. It is only worth it if you visit four or more paid attractions per day. For a short visit, buying individual tickets or using 2-for-1 offers with a National Rail ticket is cheaper. Calculate first.

Theatre: TKTS is not the only way

TKTS Leicester Square sells same-day half-price tickets — genuinely good deals, but the queues are real. TodayTix has an app with same-day digital tickets. For premium shows (Hamilton, Book of Mormon), book direct weeks ahead. For off-West End: TodayTix, Encore Tickets, or just walk up at the box office. Monday is cheapest day for West End tickets across the board.

Sunday roast: the one meal you must book

The Sunday roast is a London institution. The Harwood Arms (Fulham, one Michelin star): the roast beef is as good as anything in London. The Canton Arms (South Lambeth): pork belly, excellent beer, no reservations taken — just turn up and wait. The marks for the roast: proper Yorkshire pudding (crisp, not soggy), decent roast potatoes, real gravy, seasonal vegetables. Avoid anything pre-made.

Neighbourhoods: where to actually stay

Central London is smaller than it looks. The Elizabeth line (2022) connects Heathrow to the City in 40 minutes. Consider staying in Notting Hill (quiet, beautiful, good restaurants, two tube lines), Bermondsey (near the City, good pubs, underrated), or Wapping (riverside, quiet, no tube — but a beautiful walk to the Tower). Covent Garden is for tourists; don't sleep there.

Walk off the meal with an audio guide

Every neighborhood has a walking route with stories. Free previews on every guide.
