Transport: LA is a car city — plan for that
Los Angeles has the worst traffic in the US. The formula: drive in the early morning (before 8am), avoid driving between 4pm and 7pm, and use the freeway when it's open (the 405 southbound on Sunday morning is often clear). Ride-share (Uber/Lyft) is the standard for short trips. Metro Rail (7 lines) covers Downtown, Hollywood, and the coast — it is the fastest way to avoid the 405. Parking: street parking is free on Sundays in most residential neighborhoods; downtown meters are enforced 8am–8pm.
Beaches: which one and when
Venice: the boardwalk, the muscle beach, the skaters, the characters. Santa Monica: the pier, the beach, the crowds. Malibu: PCH driving, the beach coves, the surfing. Manhattan Beach: the volleyball courts, the bicycling path, the locals. Redondo Beach: the least touristy, the best seafood restaurants on the water. All beaches are free and open dawn to dusk. Rent a bicycle on the Marvin Braude Bike Path (Santa Monica to Redondo, 22 miles along the beach).
Hollywood: what's real, what's not
The Hollywood Walk of Fame (800+ stars since 1958) is genuinely underwhelming — most of the stars are for people you have never heard of. The Hollywood Sign is real and worth the hike. The Hollywood Bowl is the best music venue in LA and seats 17,500 under the stars. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is more interesting than most tourist attractions. The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (1927) has the history; the Chateau Marmont (1929) has the mythology.
Safety: the neighborhoods
Downtown LA is safe in the tourist areas and tourist hours (8am–10pm). Skid Row (between 3rd and 7th, Spring and Alameda) is real — do not walk here at night. South Central LA has genuine crime risk and should be navigated with the same awareness you would use in any large city. Hollywood at night is fine on the main streets, less so in the side streets. Silver Lake, Echo Park, and the Westside are perfectly safe at all hours.
Where to stay: the neighborhoods that make sense
Stay in Silver Lake or Echo Park if you want character, restaurants, and a local feel. Stay in Santa Monica if you want the beach. Stay in West Hollywood if you want nightlife and design hotels. Downtown LA is dramatically cheaper than the other options (many rooms under $150/night) and has the best food scene — but it is not walkable. Do not stay on Hollywood Boulevard: it is loud, touristy, and the hotels are poor value.
